My Porsche 911 Longhood conversion process continues. As a result, this week I tacked welded the newly formed extension piece to meet up with my new fiberglass bumper. So far so good now that the outer skin extension is in place and fitting pretty well. In this episode I explain how I formed the compound shape needed to reproduce the longhood nose shape. Although non-conventional, the CNC’s hammerform worked well for me to rough out the shape. Secondly, the English Wheel was used to smooth out all the hammer marks.
A skilled bodyman could shape this panel with only the English Wheel, however I’m not as practiced as those true craftsmen. So, I decided to machine the shape into a large block of wood after modelling it CAD software. (Everyone has different strengths and machining is one of mine!) Unfortunately, I don’t have any video footage of the CNC machining of the hammerform, but I intend to make another one for the fenders. Now that the form exists, I hammered the shape of the nose the best I could with a Nylon hammer. That is to say the hammerform didn’t allow me to over shape the panel. Unfortunately this method left me with a bunch of hammer marks. So I set the E-wheel up to gently remove the hammer bumps without changing the desired panel shape too much. Luckily, the first time was a success!
I should also mention that I did not guess on the hood shape. Rather, I took several templates of an actual Porsche Longhood for my conversion project.
Next week I will use the same hammerform to shape the inner skin and hopefully wrap up this Porsche 911 longhood conversion project. Click here to see that post/video.
